Mendut Temple was first rediscovered in 1836. All Mendut temple buildings were found except for the roof. In 1897-1904, the Dutch East Indies government made the first restoration effort with satisfactory results, although it was far from perfect. The temple's feet and body have been successfully reconstructed. In 1908 it was led by Van Erp and Mendut Temple restoration, by perfecting the shape of the roof and replacing the stupa and repairing several roof tops. Recovery was stopped due to lack of funds. But back in 1925.

Mendut Temple has a rectangular floor plan and the overall height of the Mendut temple is 26.40 m. The body of this Buddhist temple stands right on top of Batur and is about 2 m high, on the surface of Batur there is a wide hallway. For the walls of the foot of the temple itself is decorated with 31 panels containing various relief stories with beautiful flower carvings and channels.

Mendut Temple itself was founded during the reign of King Indra of the Syailendra dynasty. At the time of the coral inscription it was mentioned that Raja Indra had built a sacred building called wenuwan which means bamboo forest. This word is associated with Mendut Temple by an expert from the Netherlands named J.G. De Casparis.

Inside the Mandut Temple building there are many decorations on the wall, what are the following decorations on the Mendut Temple wall ?. There are several parts of the Mendut temple which have several stupas as a characteristic of this temple.

The cheek wall of the stairs is decorated with carved panels depicting various stories containing Buddhist teachings. The base of the stairs' cheeks are adorned with a pair of dragon heads whose mouths are wide open, while inside their mouths are animals that resemble lions. Under the dragon's head is a panel depicting dwarf creatures like Gana. The roof of the temple consists of three cubes which are arranged increasingly up and down, almost similar to the roof of the temple in Dieng and the Gedongsanga Temple Complex. Around the cube is decorated with 48 small stupas and the top of the roof is no longer left so that the original shape is no longer known.

The inside walls of the room are decorated with Kuwera or Avataka reliefs and Hariti reliefs. The Kuwera reliefs are carved into the north wall, Hariti reliefs are carved into the south wall. Kuwera is a human-eating giant who repents after meeting Buddha and turns into a god of wealth and protector of children. Kuwera also has a wife named Hariti, who was originally a human-eating giant like her husband, Kawera. Like her husband, Hariti repented after meeting Buddha and later became a protector for children. The Kuwera and Hariti reliefs are found in many Tantrayana Buddhist temples, such as Sewu Temple, Banyuniba Temple and Kalasan Temple.

Mendut Temple is located in Yogyakarta travel map in Mendut Village Mungkid District, Magelang Regency, Central Java, about 38 km to the northwest of Yogyakarta. This location is only about 3 km from the Barabudhur Temple, which is believed to have a close relationship with Pawon Temple and Mendut Temple, all three of which are located in a straight line north and south. The certainty of the construction of Mendut Temple is unknown, but J.G. de Casparis suspects that Mendut Temple was first built by the first king of the Syailendra dynasty in 824 AD This estimate is based on the contents of the Central Karang Inscription (824 AD), which states that Raja Indra had made a sacred building called Wenuwana. Then Casparis interpreted Wenuwana (bamboo forest) as Mendut Temple. It is estimated that the age of the Mendut temple building is older than the Barabudhur Temple building.
